Beer. Reformed.

Two words that describe who we are and what we do.  Beer because we are first and foremost a brewery, a brewery dedicated to creating some of the finest ales and lagers around.  Reformed because of our approach to beer.  Beer isn't meant to just be consumed, it's meant to be enjoyed and shared.  



When did "craft beer" and IPA become synonymous?  Are you looking for something different?

 Don't get us wrong.  We enjoy punishing our poor palates from time to time with all the harshest Hallertau hops we can throw at them.  Beer has so much more to offer.  From crisp lagers to tart, fruity sours, refreshing radlers to big, barrel-aged barley wines.  The spectrum of colors, aromas, and, most importantly, flavors is endless.  We'll brew traditional styles that have been brewed for centuries.  We'll experiment and take risks.  We know not everyone will like every beer we make, but that's the best thing about beer, there's always something else to try.

The taproom is the embodiment of our "Beer. Reformed." philosophy.  Instead of a noisy, distracting, atmosphere filled with loud music and televisions, our taproom will focus exclusively on the enjoyment of craft beer.  We're backing this up by implementing a three beer per person per day drink limit.  If you're looking for more of a sports bar atmosphere, there are plenty of great options in Northwest Indiana and we'll work hard to ensure you can get our beer there too.  

If you'd like to enjoy your beer over food, you may stop at one of Dyer's local restaurants, many within walking distance of the brewery, and bring the food in with you or have it delivered.  We'll also occasionally have food trucks available for on-site service with many unique food pairing opportunities.


our story

We are two Dutch friends, beer enthusiasts, husbands, and fathers.  After home brewing for years and hearing that we should start our own brewery, we did.  Our backgrounds, education, and experience gave each of us a unique set of skills well-suited for starting a brewery.

Scott Vander Griend ( is a third generation family farmer.  His family has owned and operated Vander Griend's Red Barn in nearby Lansing, IL since 1956.  He has experience farming, running a retail produce business, sourcing and purchasing fresh fruits and vegetables, and building relationships with local growers. Scott’s experience in the produce industry will give Windmill Brewing a unique edge in creating beers from the freshest local ingredients available. 

Justin Verburg (, a Dyer resident, has been home brewing for over 5 years and has brewed everything from a light, crisp rhubarb wheat beer to a massive 13% ABV Russian Imperial Stout made with honey and molasses. Justin will be responsible for brewery management, resource scheduling, recipe formulation and testing, and providing IT support. He brings with him a decade of business and IT experience and a master’s degree in Information Technology.
